Why “how many working days in a month” varies
The number of weekdays (Monday–Friday) depends on where the month starts and ends, and whether it’s a leap year. Holidays add another layer—federal, state, or company-specific days off reduce the total.
Typical ranges by month:
- 28-day month (February non-leap): 20 working days (if no holidays)
- 29-day month (February leap): 20-21 working days
- 30-day months: 21-22 working days
- 31-day months: 22-23 working days
How the calculation works
We start with the first day of the month, loop through every day, and count those where the day of the week is Monday through Friday (or your selected weekend days). Then we subtract any holiday dates you’ve entered.
For payroll, remember that some months have 23 working days—those are often the exception. Use our calculator to budget accurately.
