Why “how many weekdays in a year” varies
The number of weekdays depends on two factors: whether the year is a leap year (366 vs 365 days) and what day of the week January 1 falls on. A common year has 52 weeks + 1 day, so the extra day adds one more weekday if it’s Monday–Friday, or a weekend day if it’s Saturday or Sunday.
Typical ranges:
- Common year (365 days): 260 or 261 weekdays
- Leap year (366 days): 261 or 262 weekdays
- Average: About 260.7 weekdays per year
How the calculation works
We start with January 1, loop through every day of the year, and count those where the day of the week is Monday through Friday. Then we subtract any holidays you’ve selected (with adjustments for weekends).
Leap years add February 29. If it’s a weekday, that’s an extra work day. If it’s a weekend, it doesn’t affect the weekday count.
